I am informed by Chinese Government that an opportunity

is being sought by Sun Yat Sen to oust Shen Tau-liang from his post of Head of the Chinese Telegraph Office at Hongkong,

and also that threats of assassination have been made to the

latter.

They desire me to beg that Shen be supported in his post

by your Government, and that adequate protection be afforded

him.

I am forwarding a copy of latter by post.

Similar application was recently made to H.B.M. Consul-

General, Canton, in case of Shameen Telegraph Office: please

repeat this to Canton for his information.
